The Project

< BORDERS > is a project that proceeds in phases.
Each phase corresponds to an episode of 40-45 minutes.
It contains 6 episodes that will be transmitted monthly from 24 September 2004 on the satellite channel PLANET.
Each phase/episode contains different stories with a common theme, connecting the various video- text fragments that act as links.

<BORDERS> makes its moves on the boundaryes between documentary _ video-inquest _ docufiction_

< BORDERS> focalises on facts and stories that are on the margins of History and at the same time create History.
…It tells of a world made up of many worlds, and therefore, even if tragic, wonderful.
The frontiers are places - non places that symbolise our time
… places - non places where different stories, people, languages meet
…hybrid places that by their nature are pulsing with life

The border-lines are places suspended between a ‘before’ and an ‘after’ places of passage, extreme places, as extreme as life and death….

The third episode of Borders by Riot Generation Video is a “hot” enquiry on the forms of conflict of the european urban precariousness, it deals with the issue of precarious and intermittent work, and with the proposals that precarious workers – the flexworkers – are pushing concerning a working and living condition that millions of people in the worl have in common.
The third step of borders focuses on three episodes of the mobilizations promoted by the flexworkers during the year 2004
1 the apparitons of St. Precarious in Italy
2 the Euro May Day Parade of Milano on May the 1st 2004
3 the protest of the french intermittents during the 2004 Cannes festival

With BORDERS _Flexworkers of Europe let’s unite, Riot Generation Video tries not only to describe the event of the 2004 May Day Parade, but it also tries to grasp the context, the preparation, the imaginary, the duration. Where production of sense and work match, performing the preparation and the actions of the 1st of may in Milano, also means to do an appropriate inquiry on a “hot” topic like life forms, sociality, and desire of rebellion of the new social composition. The episode goes all the way through this attitude, granting the right to speach to subjects and forms of conflict.
The May Day Parade, the party and the street parade of the precarious workers, born in Milano on May the 1st 2001 and in 2004 at its fourth edition, has gained a political centrality and an extraordinary suggestion. The May day parade has always been characterized by a strong communicative and detouring communication, and this year it was the result of a long and shared preparation, marked by the apparitions of St. Precarious, the saint of all the precarious workers with no rights, of all the part time and project workers, of all those without payed holidays or maternity. The apparitons, the first one was in Milano on February the 29th, happened at the same time with important “processions”, to say pickets or self reductions in big shopping malls.
The May Day has been an incredible event: 42 trucks, all the commercial chains in Milano picketed and shut, 100.000 young precarious and cognitarious in Milano, 10.000 in Barcelona at its first edition, occupied trains in Roma, Bologna, Venezia e Padova.
The final part of the episode is dedicated to the mobilizations of the french intermittents of the show business in Canne, during the 57° festival of cinema.
